ĠENN finished their tour at the Lexington in style with a blistering set which had all the atmosphere of a band who’ve been playing to bigger crowds for years. Leona’s energy was palpable, striding on stage and spending the entire set moving around like it’s the first night of a tour.

ĠENN are an extremely accomplished group of musicians and it’s criminal that they are working so hard to get recognition. It’s hard to pigeonhole their sound because they just don’t sound like anyone else – in the best way. Every now and then you could hear accents of Skunk Anansie and even Led Zeppelin but ĠENN really are in a league of their own.

It was touching to hear them talk about putting an album out by themselves and how hard touring can be. The time on stage often makes being in a band look easier than it is – for those of us who’ve played in bands, we know only too well what they mean – the gig is over in a flash, the hard work of promoting, touring, writing, recording, and pushing for recognition only to feel like you’ve still got such a long way to go is exhausting.

What’s frustrating is ĠENN sound like they don’t have a long way to go. They sound like a band who’ve found their groove with each other, established their sound and are now ready for the big time. The music industry is failing artists like ĠENN. They’re as good as any of the mainstream bands around right now so why are they being overlooked?

If you get the chance to see them, go. If you haven’t got their record yet, buy it. They are well worth your time and deserve the recognition.
